The boat was built in 1937\u20131939 in the Village of \u00d5ngu on Hiiumaa Island. Most of its life was spent abroad. Now after 50 years, this giant has been brought back for restoration to the S\u00f5ru Harbour in Hiiumaa, which is the only wooden boat restoration centre in Estonia.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first captain was Arnold T\u00fcri, whose father, Villem T\u00fcri, was one\u00a0 of the owners. One of the first jobs for Alar was carrying wood. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately new winds began to blow. In the summer of 1940 the\u00a0 boat began to carry construction material for the Soviet army bases from\u00a0 Loksa to Saaremaa. The ship had many different captains. The\u00a0 Estonian - blue\/black\/white flag, which was there only a year, was\u00a0 replaced with the red flag in August.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of the war the crew somehow wasn't sent to Leningrad\u00a0 and so Alar stayed in Estonian waters during the war. At the end of the\u00a0 war the owners of the ship and the crew with families (altogether 144\u00a0 people) prepared to escape on board the Alar to neutral waters of Sweden.\u00a0 But their plan was betrayed to the German security police and they got\u00a0 caught in the port of K\u00f5rgessaare. The seized ship was taken to\u00a0 Haapsalu, where women and children were released. The men were taken\u00a0 to a prison in Tallinn. Many of them were sentenced to death. This wasn't\u00a0 completed as the Russian army came closer.Some of these men were able\u00a0 to go to Sweden later. The Germans took Alar under their flag and by the\u00a0 name of Kurland to Germany.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several years later captain Arnold T\u00fcri, who had moved to the United\u00a0 States, found his ship of youth in the port of Hamburg. He took it to\u00a0 England. It was thoroughly rebuilt there and renamed \u201cArne\u201d. It was\u00a0 sent again to sea with an Estonian crew and at first under the flag of\u00a0 Panama.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The captain sold the ship to Sweden and it worked under the Swedish\u00a0 flag until 1968. Captain T\u00fcri bought this ship, which needed thorough\u00a0 reconstruction, back from Sweden and took it to the port of Hobro in\u00a0 Denmark.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For several reasons the reconstruction took decades. 60 years after\u00a0 starting to build Alar there was an idea in Estonia (who was now free\u00a0 again) to bring this miraculously saved ship back to Estonia. On July 28,\u00a0 1998 Alar was towed from Hobro to Hiiumaa. The ship, which was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made\u00a0 at \u00d5ngu beach, had come home after 59 years of adventures.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On September 14, 1998 Estonian ambassador Ernst Jaakson (whose\u00a0 roots were in Hiiumaa) was interned at Kensico cemetery in the United\u00a0 States of America. The Emmaste local government renamed the ship\u00a0 after him Ernst Jaakson. This decision has a symbolic power.
