Nigolas M\u00e4hle owed his wealth to good relations with the administration of\u00a0 the K\u00e4rdla factory, which exercised control over the number of stores allowed in K\u00e4rdla\u00a0 through the municipal government. M\u00e4hle\u2019s goods were believed to be too expensive and he re-\u00a0 acted to the complaints over the too high price of the goods by saying that he took only a small\u00a0 profit: merely one kopeck on every kopeck. As the trading business in the town was controlled,\u00a0 competition was non-existent and he gained more and more wealth. The M\u00e4hle family were the\u00a0 first Estonian-born residents in Hiiumaa who could send their sons to a university.\r\n\r\nInitially, one end of the house accommodated a store.
