It was from the shore of T\u00e4rkma that people went by boats to\u00a0 the neighbouring island to grind grain, pick berries, or engage in other\u00a0 activities, not to mention fishing. Access to the ice road connecting the\u00a0 two islands was also right here, by T\u00e4rkma village. At the beginning of\u00a0 the 20th century, a marine rescue station was built on the T\u00e4rkma coast.\u00a0 The station\u2019s equipment included an iceboat for rescue operations in\u00a0 wintertime. There were only four stations like that one in the whole Estonia back then.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The gently sloping coast is dotted with a number of hillocks and holes \u2013\u00a0 remnants of salt evaporation and brick production in bygone times. The\u00a0 T\u00e4rkma \u2018salt life\u2019, as the local people called the place, started its production activity in the year 1809. The seawater required for extracting salt\u00a0 was evaporated in a big open pan, where it was boiled continuously for\u00a0 48-56 hours, which resulted in 450 kg of wet salt. Within a week, a little\u00a0 more than one panful of salt was produced. It was then dried in the\u00a0 threshing room. It took 200 sleigh loads of wood to produce a ton of\u00a0 salt. The work was supervised by the German salt boiler Adam Huth,\u00a0 who had been hired for just that purpose. The production activity lasted\u00a0 until 1812, when the price of salt fell in the world. During that short\u00a0 time, about 27 tons of salt is said to have been sold from Emmaste. At\u00a0 the turn of the 20th century, at least two brickworks with about 20 kilns\u00a0 were operated here.
